Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved injectable neuromodulators that temporarily relax the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. By reducing activity in these muscles, they can soften the appearance of these lines for a smoother, more rested look.
Botox
Botox treatment is most effective for dynamic wrinkles such as the glabella folds between the eyebrows. The treatment takes around 10 minutes and may not require any downtime or recovery. Results can be visible within around 3-5 days, and may continue to impress for up to 6 months.
The Procedure
A topical anesthetic or ice may be used to numb the area if necessary, though most of the time the procedure causes little pain and is well tolerated without either. Dr. Shabdiz prefers to inject patients when they are awake and seated upright and interacting with him.
Recovery
Post-treatment, patients may experience minor swelling, bleeding, bruising and pain in the treated areas of the skin. The bleeding and swelling will reduce within a few hours and the bruising and pain will take a few days to heal.
When administered by a qualified physician, Botox and Dysport have a well-established safety profile and are generally well tolerated. As with any injectable there is a small risk of bruising, infection or allergic reaction, and Dr. Shabdiz will review your health history to confirm you are a good candidate. However, if you have extremely sensitive skin, you may develop acne-like eruptions, but don’t worry. Dr. Shabdiz will prescribe an antibiotic, which will help you recover quickly.
Post-treatment, patients must avoid using their facial muscles extensively for at least 24-48 hours. Recovery takes 2-3 days, after which patients can return to their daily schedule. Both the Botox and Dysport injectable last for a term of 4-6 months, after which you may need to return for another round of treatment.
